Key Concepts Breakdown
1 Reflexive Verbs
Reflexive verbs use a reflexive pronoun (me, te, se, nous, vous, se) that matches the subject and precedes the verb. Students must be able to conjugate them in present tense and use them in sentences about daily routine. On exams, students are tested on correct pronoun-subject agreement and proper word order.
Key Points
- Reflexive pronouns: me (I), te (you), se (he/she/it/they), nous (we), vous (you formal/plural)
- Word order: subject + reflexive pronoun + verb (Je me lève — I get up)
- In negation, ne comes before the reflexive pronoun: Je ne me lève pas
- Common exam verbs: se lever, se laver, se coucher, s'habiller, se brosser, se réveiller
Fill in the blank: Nous _____ (se laver) les mains avant de manger.
The subject is nous, so the reflexive pronoun must be nous — giving nous nous lavons. The verb laver is conjugated in present tense for nous as lavons. The full answer is Nous nous lavons les mains avant de manger.
2 Telling Time
Students must express time using il est + hour + heure(s) and know the vocabulary for half past, quarter past, and quarter to. Exams test both reading a clock and writing time in French from a given digital or analog format. The 24-hour (military) format is also commonly tested at this level.
Key Points
- Il est + [number] + heure(s): Il est deux heures (It is 2:00)
- Half past = et demie; quarter past = et quart; quarter to = moins le quart
- Noon = midi, midnight = minuit (no heure after these)
- Minutes after the hour are added directly: Il est trois heures vingt (3:20)
Write in French: It is 7:45 PM.
7:45 is 15 minutes before 8:00, so use moins le quart: Il est huit heures moins le quart. For PM in context, you can add du soir: Il est huit heures moins le quart du soir. Alternatively, in 24-hour format this would be dix-neuf heures quarante-cinq.
3 Daily Routine Expressions
Students must know time-order adverbs and phrases used to sequence a daily routine and connect reflexive verbs into a coherent paragraph. Exams typically ask students to write or order sentences describing a morning or evening routine using these sequencing words. Correct use of reflexive verbs alongside these expressions is expected.
Key Points
- Sequencing words: d'abord (first), ensuite/puis (then/next), après (after), enfin/finalement (finally)
- Time expressions: le matin (in the morning), le soir (in the evening), à [time] (at a specific time)
- Frequency adverbs: toujours (always), souvent (often), quelquefois (sometimes), ne...jamais (never)
- Routine verbs tested in sequence: se réveiller → se lever → se laver → s'habiller → prendre le petit-déjeuner
Put these sentences in logical order and add a sequencing word to each: (a) Je m'habille. (b) Je me réveille à six heures. (c) Je me brosse les dents. (d) Je me lave.
A logical morning routine flows from waking to washing to brushing to dressing. The correct order is: D'abord, je me réveille à six heures. Ensuite, je me lave. Puis, je me brosse les dents. Enfin, je m'habille. Sequencing words signal order and are required for full credit on writing tasks.
