A communication skill that involves fully concentrating on a speaker, understanding their message, and responding thoughtfully. It goes beyond simply hearing words and includes making eye contact, asking clarifying questions, and paraphrasing what the speaker said.
How It Works
- Face the speaker and give them your full attention.
- Avoid interrupting while the speaker is talking.
- Note key points and nonverbal cues.
- Ask clarifying questions when the speaker finishes.
- Paraphrase or summarize what you heard to confirm understanding.
Examples
- Saying 'So you're saying that the theme is about identity?' to confirm understanding
- Nodding and maintaining eye contact during a classmate's presentation
- Taking notes during a group discussion to refer back to others' points
