Dramatic conventions

English

Definition

The standard techniques and devices used in plays and theatrical performances, including soliloquies, asides, stage directions, acts and scenes, and dramatic irony. Understanding these conventions helps readers and audiences interpret what is happening beyond the surface dialogue.

Examples

  • A soliloquy in which Hamlet reveals his inner thoughts directly to the audience
  • An aside where a character whispers a secret comment the other characters cannot hear
  • Stage directions like '[Exit, pursued by a bear]' in The Winter's Tale
