Definition

The long-term increase in Earth's average surface temperature primarily caused by human activities that increase greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere. Since the Industrial Revolution, average temperatures have risen significantly due to burning fossil fuels and deforestation.

  • Global average temperature rising about 1.1°C since pre-industrial times
  • Coral bleaching events becoming more frequent due to warmer ocean water
