Impulse

Science

Definition

The product of force and the time interval over which it acts. Impulse equals the change in momentum of an object. A larger force or longer contact time produces a greater impulse.

Examples

  • A baseball bat contacting a ball for a brief time to change its momentum
  • Airbags extending the time of impact to reduce force on passengers
  • A golf club applying impulse to drive a ball off the tee
Key Fact

J = FΔt = Δp (impulse equals change in momentum)
