Invasive species

Science

Definition

Non-native organisms introduced to an ecosystem where they lack natural predators or competitors, allowing them to spread rapidly and cause ecological or economic harm. Invasive species are a leading cause of biodiversity loss worldwide.

Examples

  • Zebra mussels clogging water intake pipes in the Great Lakes
  • Kudzu vine smothering native plants across the southeastern United States
  • Cane toads in Australia poisoning native predators that try to eat them
