Midsegments

Math

Definition

A segment connecting the midpoints of two sides of a triangle. The midsegment is parallel to the third side and exactly half its length. This is known as the Triangle Midsegment Theorem.

Examples

  • In a triangle with a base of 10 cm, the midsegment parallel to the base is 5 cm
  • Using midsegments to find missing lengths in coordinate geometry problems
  • The three midsegments of a triangle form a smaller triangle with 1/4 the area
Key Fact

A midsegment is parallel to the third side and half its length.
