Order of operations

Math

Definition

The standard sequence for evaluating mathematical expressions: Parentheses first, then Exponents, then Multiplication and Division (left to right), then Addition and Subtraction (left to right).

Examples

  • 2 + 3 × 4 = 14 (multiply before adding)
  • (2 + 3) × 4 = 20 (parentheses first)
  • 6 ÷ 2(1+2) requires careful attention to grouping
Key Fact
