Piecewise functions
MathDefinition
A function defined by different formulas for different intervals of the domain. Each piece applies only to its specified interval, and the pieces together cover the entire domain.
Examples
- Absolute value: f(x) = x if x ≥ 0, f(x) = -x if x < 0
- Cell phone plans that charge one rate up to a limit, then a different rate after
- Tax brackets where different income ranges are taxed at different rates
