Poetic form and structure

English

Definition

The way a poem is organized in terms of its line length, stanza arrangement, rhyme scheme, and meter. Form and structure shape how the poem is read and experienced, with fixed forms like sonnets following strict rules and free verse allowing more flexibility.

Examples

  • A Shakespearean sonnet has 14 lines in three quatrains and a couplet with an ABAB CDCD EFEF GG rhyme scheme
  • A haiku follows a 5-7-5 syllable structure across three lines
  • Free verse poetry has no set rhyme or meter, as in much of Walt Whitman's work
