Political parties

Definition

Organized groups of people who share similar political beliefs and work together to win elections, operate government, and influence public policy. In the United States, the Democratic and Republican parties have dominated politics since the mid-1800s, creating a two-party system.

  • The Democratic Party generally associated with liberal policies on social issues
  • The Republican Party generally associated with conservative economic and social policies
  • Third parties like the Green Party or Libertarian Party occasionally influencing elections
