In German, certain prepositions always require the noun or pronoun that follows them to be in the dative case. The most common dative prepositions are aus, bei, mit, nach, seit, von, and zu.

- Ich gehe mit dem Hund. (I walk with the dog.)
- Sie kommt aus der Schule. (She comes from school.)
- Er wohnt bei seiner Großmutter. (He lives at his grandmother's.)
