The system of marks (such as periods, commas, semicolons, and dashes) used in writing to separate sentences and clauses, clarify meaning, and indicate pauses or emphasis. Correct punctuation ensures that writing is clear and readable.

Examples

  • A comma separating items in a list: "apples, oranges, and bananas"
  • A semicolon joining two related independent clauses: "She studied hard; she passed the exam"
  • An em dash adding emphasis: "He had one goal — to win"
