Definition

The four regions of the coordinate plane created by the x-axis and y-axis. They are numbered I through IV counterclockwise starting from the upper right.

Examples

  • Quadrant I: both x and y are positive, like (3, 5)
  • Quadrant II: x is negative, y is positive, like (-2, 4)
  • Quadrant III: both x and y are negative, like (-1, -3)
