Reflection

Science

Definition

Reflection occurs when a wave bounces off a surface. The law of reflection states that the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection, both measured from the normal (perpendicular) to the surface.

Examples

  • Seeing your image in a flat bathroom mirror
  • A laser beam bouncing off a mirror at the same angle it hit
  • The Moon reflecting sunlight to appear bright in the night sky
Key Fact

Law of reflection: angle of incidence (θᵢ) = angle of reflection (θᵣ)
