Reflections

Math

Definition

A transformation that flips a figure over a line (line of reflection), creating a mirror image. Each point and its image are equidistant from the line of reflection.

Examples

  • Reflecting (3, 2) over the y-axis gives (-3, 2)
  • Reflecting (3, 2) over the x-axis gives (3, -2)
  • Reflecting over the line y = x swaps coordinates: (3, 2) → (2, 3)
Key Fact

Over x-axis: (x,y)→(x,-y); Over y-axis: (x,y)→(-x,y); Over y=x: (x,y)→(y,x)
