Seismology

Science

Definition

Seismology is the scientific study of earthquakes and the propagation of seismic waves through the Earth. Seismologists use data from seismographs to determine earthquake locations, magnitudes, and to map Earth's internal structure.

Examples

  • Using P-waves and S-waves to locate an earthquake's epicenter through triangulation
  • The Richter scale and moment magnitude scale measuring earthquake strength
  • Seismic wave analysis revealing that Earth's outer core is liquid (S-waves cannot pass through it)
Key Fact

P-waves travel through solids and liquids; S-waves travel only through solids
