Definition

The practice of incorporating outside sources into your writing through direct quotation, paraphrasing, or summarizing, while properly attributing the original author. Effective source integration blends evidence seamlessly with your own analysis to strengthen your argument.

How It Works

  1. Introduce the source with a signal phrase that names the author or publication.
  2. Present the evidence as a direct quote, paraphrase, or summary.
  3. Cite the source using the required format (MLA, APA, etc.).
  4. Follow the evidence with your own analysis explaining how it supports your point.
  5. Ensure the source material flows naturally within your paragraph's argument.

Examples

  • Signal phrase + quote: According to Smith, "climate change poses the greatest threat to biodiversity" (42).
  • Paraphrase with citation: Recent research suggests that biodiversity loss accelerates when temperatures rise by more than 2°C (Smith 42).
  • Summarizing a source's argument in one sentence, then analyzing how it supports your thesis
