Definition

A global conflict from 1939 to 1945 that pitted the Allied Powers against the Axis Powers. It was caused by unresolved tensions from WWI, the rise of fascism, and aggressive expansionism by Germany, Japan, and Italy. The war ended with Allied victory, the founding of the United Nations, and the beginning of the Cold War.
