Key Concepts Breakdown
1 Travel Vocabulary
Students must know key nouns and verbs related to travel, including airport, hotel, and trip-planning vocabulary. Exams typically test matching, fill-in-the-blank, and short translation of these terms in context. Knowing gender (el/la) for nouns is also tested.
Key Points
- Key nouns: el aeropuerto, el vuelo, el pasaporte, la maleta, el boleto/billete, el hotel, la reservación, la llegada, la salida
- Key verbs: viajar, facturar (to check baggage), abordar (to board), llegar, salir, quedarse (to stay)
- Adjectives/phrases: de ida y vuelta (round trip), de ida (one way), retrasado/a (delayed), a tiempo (on time)
- Exams often give a travel scenario and ask you to select or write the correct vocabulary word in context
Fill in the blank: Necesito mostrar mi ________ antes de abordar el avión.
The sentence means 'I need to show my ________ before boarding the plane.' The correct answer is 'pasaporte' because a passport is the document required before boarding. Other travel documents like 'boleto' could be tempting, but the verb 'mostrar' combined with the boarding context points specifically to passport.
2 Directions
Students must be able to give and follow directions in Spanish using command forms (imperative) and prepositions of location. Exams test whether students can interpret a map description or write directions from one place to another. Both tú and usted command forms may appear.
Key Points
- Direction commands: sigue/siga (continue), dobla/doble (turn), cruza/cruce (cross), para/pare (stop)
- Cardinal directions: al norte, al sur, al este, al oeste
- Prepositions/phrases: a la derecha, a la izquierda, recto/derecho (straight), al lado de, enfrente de, detrás de, cerca de, lejos de
- Exams often show a simple map and ask students to write or complete directions from point A to point B
Look at a map. The school is at the corner of Calle Uno and Calle Dos. The library is two blocks north, then one block to the left. Write directions from the school to the library using at least two commands.
A correct response would be: 'Sigue recto dos cuadras al norte. Luego, dobla a la izquierda.' The first sentence uses the command 'sigue' with a distance and direction. The second uses 'dobla' with 'a la izquierda' to complete the route — both are standard command structures exams require.
3 Transportation Modes
Students must know vocabulary for different modes of transportation and how to use the verbs 'ir en' and 'tomar' to express how someone travels. Exams test both identifying the correct transport word and constructing sentences about travel preferences or plans.
Key Points
- Transport nouns: el autobús, el tren, el avión, el carro/coche, el metro, el taxi, la bicicleta, el barco, el camión
- Use 'ir en + vehicle' for most transport: voy en autobús, van en tren
- Exception: 'ir a pie' (to go on foot) — does NOT use 'en'
- 'Tomar' can replace 'ir en': tomo el metro = I take the subway
Choose the correct sentence: (A) Voy en pie al parque. (B) Voy a pie al parque. (C) Voy en el pie al parque.
The correct answer is (B) because 'a pie' is a fixed expression meaning 'on foot' and never uses the preposition 'en.' Option (A) incorrectly applies the 'ir en' pattern, and option (C) adds an unnecessary article. This is a classic exam trap because students overgeneralize the 'ir en' rule to all transportation.
