Characterization

The methods an author uses to develop and reveal a character's personality. Direct characterization tells the reader explicitly what a character is like, while indirect characterization shows personality through the character's speech, thoughts, actions, appearance, and how others react to them.
Examples
- Direct: 'Maria was the kindest person in town.'
- Indirect through action: A character secretly leaving food for a homeless person reveals generosity
- Indirect through dialogue: A character who constantly interrupts others reveals impatience or arrogance
