Connotation and denotation
EnglishDefinition
Two layers of word meaning. Denotation is a word's literal, dictionary definition, while connotation is the emotional feeling or cultural association the word carries. Understanding both helps readers interpret texts more deeply and helps writers choose words with precision.
Examples
- 'Home' denotes a place where one lives, but connotes warmth, safety, and belonging
- 'Snake' denotes a reptile, but can connote deceit or danger
- 'Childlike' and 'childish' share a denotation (like a child) but differ in connotation (innocent vs. immature)
