Definition

Word choice, also called diction, is the deliberate selection of specific words to convey precise meaning, create tone, and influence the reader's response. Strong word choice is the difference between flat, generic writing and vivid, compelling prose.

Examples

  • Choosing 'staggered' instead of 'walked' to show exhaustion or injury
  • Using 'home' (warm, personal) vs. 'residence' (formal, detached) depending on tone
  • A politician saying 'investment' instead of 'spending' to frame a budget positively
