Days and months

Foreign Languages

Definition

Days of the week and months of the year are fundamental vocabulary in any foreign language. Unlike English, many languages do not capitalize day and month names, and the first day of the week varies by culture.

Examples

  • Spanish: lunes, martes, miércoles... / enero, febrero, marzo... (not capitalized).
  • French: lundi, mardi, mercredi... / janvier, février, mars... (not capitalized).
  • German: Montag, Dienstag, Mittwoch... / Januar, Februar, März... (capitalized, as all German nouns are).
Key Fact

In Spanish and French, days and months are NOT capitalized. In German, they ARE capitalized because all nouns are capitalized in German.
