Definition

Water found beneath Earth's surface in the pores and fractures of rock and sediment. It fills the spaces in aquifers and is accessed through wells and springs. Groundwater supplies about 30% of the world's freshwater and is recharged by precipitation seeping through soil.

  • The Ogallala Aquifer supplying irrigation water to the Great Plains
  • Wells drilled into aquifers for residential drinking water
  • Springs forming where the water table intersects the surface
