Definition

A straight line drawn through a scatter plot that best represents the overall trend of the data. It is typically found using the least-squares regression method to minimize the total squared error between the line and the data points.

Examples

  • Drawing a trend line through height vs. weight data for a group of students
  • Using a line of best fit to predict future sales based on past data
  • Estimating the boiling point of a liquid at a given altitude
