Scatter plots

Math

Definition

A graph that displays the relationship between two quantitative variables by plotting data points as dots on a coordinate plane. Each dot represents one observation with its x- and y-values. Scatter plots help reveal patterns such as linear trends, clusters, or outliers.

Examples

  • Plotting students' study hours (x) against test scores (y) to see if more studying leads to higher scores
  • Graphing height vs. weight for a group of people to observe the positive association
