Main idea and details

English

Definition

A reading comprehension framework in which the main idea is the central message of a text and the supporting details are the facts, examples, reasons, and evidence that develop or prove that central message. Identifying both helps readers understand and summarize what they read.

How It Works

  1. Read the full passage to get an overall sense of the topic.
  2. Identify the topic sentence or thesis that states the central point.
  3. Locate supporting details such as facts, statistics, examples, or anecdotes.
  4. Determine how each detail connects to and supports the main idea.
  5. Summarize the passage by restating the main idea and key supporting points.

Examples

  • Main idea: Exercise improves mental health. Details: studies show reduced anxiety, increased endorphin production, and better sleep
  • Main idea: The Industrial Revolution transformed society. Details: urbanization, factory labor, child labor laws, new transportation
