Definition

The nervous system is the body's rapid communication network, consisting of the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) and the peripheral nervous system (sensory and motor nerves). It detects stimuli, processes information, and coordinates responses through electrical impulses traveling along neurons.

  • Pulling your hand away from a hot stove via a reflex arc
  • The brain interpreting visual signals from the eyes
  • The autonomic nervous system regulating heart rate and digestion
