Pinyin initials and finals
Foreign LanguagesDefinition
Pinyin is the romanization system for Mandarin Chinese, where each syllable is made up of an initial (consonant sound at the beginning) and a final (the vowel sound and any ending). There are 21 initials and around 36 finals in standard pinyin. Mastering these combinations is essential for correct Chinese pronunciation.
Examples
- The syllable 'bā' has initial 'b' and final 'a' with first tone
- 'zh,' 'ch,' 'sh,' and 'r' are initials unique to Chinese with no direct English equivalents
- The final 'üe' (as in 'yuè') requires lip rounding not common in English
Key Fact
21 initials (b, p, m, f, d, t, n, l, g, k, h, j, q, x, zh, ch, sh, r, z, c, s) + ~36 finals
