Plant structure

Science

Definition

Plant structure refers to the organization of plant organs and tissues. The three main organs are roots (absorb water and minerals, anchor the plant), stems (support and transport), and leaves (photosynthesis). Vascular tissue includes xylem (water transport upward) and phloem (sugar transport throughout).

Examples

  • Xylem vessels transporting water from roots to leaves through transpiration
  • Guard cells opening and closing stomata to regulate gas exchange in leaves
  • Root hairs increasing surface area for water and mineral absorption
