Definition

Cell organelles are specialized structures within a cell that perform specific functions, much like organs in a body. Key organelles include the nucleus, mitochondria, ribosomes, endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus, and lysosomes.

  • Mitochondria generate ATP through cellular respiration to power cell activities
  • The rough endoplasmic reticulum has ribosomes that synthesize proteins
  • Chloroplasts in plant cells capture sunlight to perform photosynthesis
