Counterarguments

English

Definition

Opposing viewpoints or objections that challenge your main argument. Addressing counterarguments in persuasive or argumentative writing strengthens your essay by showing you have considered other perspectives and can defend your position against them.

How It Works

  1. Identify the strongest objection someone might raise against your thesis.
  2. Fairly present the counterargument without distorting or weakening it.
  3. Refute the counterargument with evidence, logic, or by exposing its flaws.
  4. Explain why your original argument still holds despite the objection.

Examples

  • 'Some argue that school uniforms limit self-expression; however, research shows they reduce bullying and economic pressure on families.'
  • Acknowledging that social media has educational benefits before arguing its harms outweigh them
  • Conceding that raising minimum wage may increase costs while arguing the net benefit to workers is greater
