Definition

Errors in reasoning that weaken an argument by relying on faulty logic rather than sound evidence. Recognizing logical fallacies helps you evaluate the strength of arguments in essays, speeches, advertisements, and debates.

Examples

  • Ad hominem: attacking the person instead of the argument ("You can't trust her opinion — she's only a student")
  • Straw man: misrepresenting someone's argument to make it easier to attack
  • Slippery slope: claiming one small action will inevitably lead to extreme consequences
