Federalism
Definition
A system of government in which power is divided between a central (national) government and regional (state) governments. The U.S. Constitution establishes federalism by granting some powers exclusively to the federal government, reserving others to the states, and sharing certain powers between both levels.
Examples
- The federal government controls national defense while states manage their own education systems
- Both federal and state governments have the power to tax citizens
- Marriage and driver's license laws vary by state because they fall under state authority
