Definition
A period of radical political and social upheaval in France from 1789 to 1799 that overthrew the monarchy, established a republic, and culminated in Napoleon's rise to power. It was driven by Enlightenment ideals, economic crisis, and resentment toward the privileges of the nobility and clergy.
